Not only is it the 30th anniversary of the races at Henley, but this year marks the 30th anniversary of the lightweight Women’s Boat Race. It will be the final year for the Newton Women’s Boat Race at Henley, as, in an historic moment for women’s rowing, they join their male counterparts on the Tideway next year.
Races included contests between Women’s blues, Men’s and Women’s Lightweights, Women’s Reserves and Men’s and Women’s intercollegiate finals.
The action-packed day included several blade clashes, one lost oar (Blondie), a contested result from the women’s lightweights, many picnics and a great deal of shouting.
The event was drawn to a close with a poignant commemorative row past of the inaugural Women’s Lightweight crews from 30 years ago. The crew tweeted earlier: ‘Once a lightblue, always a lightblue’.
