Phin Adams up for Radio Academy Award

Joe Goodman

Cam FM's very own Phin Adams is up for the 2014 Radio Academy Award (formerly Sony awards) for 'Speech Personality of the Year'. His nomination pits him in a category against radio giants Danny Baker on 5Live (BBC Radio 5 live), Johnny Vaughan (talkSPORT), Alan Robson (Metro Radio & TFM) and Nick Ferrari (LBC 97.3). To put this in perspective, Phin has 71 followers on Twitter while Danny Baker currently stands at 325,000.

Phin won the prestigious Kevin Greening Award at the Student Radio Awards earlier this year but this time round he is up against well-established industry professionals at one of the industry’s most glamorous and prestigious events.

Tim O’Brien, former station manager at Cam FM, said ‘it's an absolutely ridiculous achievement for a student, and quite possibly a first for student radio - if not, then at least for Cam FM. To see Phin’s name alongside industry legends in the nominations makes us all extremely proud. It’s incredibly well-deserved.’

In the past year Phin has established himself on the student radio scene through his cheeky and enthusiastic personality, interviewing the likes of Rowan Williams, Quentin Blake, and Alistair Campbell. Most notably, he changed his name to 'Pop Man' by deed poll as part of an on-air challenge, and will graduate with it unless he plays every number one from 1950-2014 before graduation. It’s taken him the past six months just to get to 1970!

The Radio Academy Awards take place at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on 12 May and will be hosted by Chris Evans. Good luck Phin!
